Arm Torn from Body

Desmond Thomas, aged 14 years, had the a limb torn from his body, while working at Zwars Tannery in Beechworth on this day in 1938. The boy was caught in shafting when his arm became entangled and ripped from his body. Thomas is employed as an improver at the tannery, and he was throwing a side of leather over a rack when the end became entangled in the shafting, which was revolving rapidly. The boy’s arm was drawn in with the leather, arid twisted around the shaft. The limb was fractured in several places, and completely torn. Thomas had only been employed at the tannery for a short period. The injured boy was convened to the Ovens District Hospital for treatment, where an amputation was required and a blood transfusions.
