The First Vegemite

On This Day – June 13, 1923

INTRODUCTION OF VEGEMITE TO AUSTRALIA

On this day in 1923, the famous Australian breakfast spread was introduced.

It was developed by Dr Cyril P Callister for the Fred Walker’s company which would later become the Kraft Food Company.  Callister was hired to develop a spread from the richest known source in the Vitamin B group – Brewers Yeast.

The naming of the spread was left to the public, however the winners name is not recorded.  Fred Walker’s daughter chose the winning entry of VEGEMITE.

It was released to the public on this day with the marketing – “Delicious on sandwiches and toast, and improving the flavours of soups, stews and gravies”.

Australia has been enjoying Vegemite ever since! Although the rest of the world seem to wonder why!!
