ON THIS DAY…… 9th Janurary 1985
The Faraday School kidnapper, Mr Edwin John Eastwood, 34, was baptised into the Seventh Day Adventist Church in a ceremony in a makeshift pool in a yard of Pentridge Gaol’s maximum security section, Jika Jika. Mr Eastwood in 1972 kidnapped a young schoolteacher and six students from the Faraday Primary School. After being convicted and sentenced to 15 years’ gaol he escaped from Geelong Gaol in 1977 and kidnapped the headmaster and pupils from Wooreen school, in Gippsland. In 1983 he was acquitted of having murdered a prison inmate, Mr Glen Joseph Davies and wasn’t eligible for parole until 1990. Pastor Ken Low, who attended the baptism, said Mr Eastwood made a brief speech “admitting he had made some terrible mistakes in his past life” and committed himself to God.
