On this day ………… 13th February 1900
A rather alarming discovery was made on Bungonia road, in the Goulburn district of New South Wales, when the wheel of a dray broke through a cover about half a foot thick over an abandoned mine shaft 20ft. deep. It is said the shaft was sunk thirty years before, but how it came to be overlooked when the road was formed is a mystery. A pole was placed in the hole to warn others of the danger. However on this night in 1900 the mailman’s horse shied at it, and jumped over the embankment into the creek. The mailman jumped out of the vehicle as it was going over the edge.
