But as for the Blackwood Cemetery ….  this is a letter to the editor from 1877 highlighting some of the difficulties of grave digging at Blackwood!!

THE BLACKWOOD CEMETERY

To the Editor of the Courier

Sir – Permit me, through your columns, to draw tot he attention of the trustees of the Blackwood Cemetery (if there are any) to the disgraceful scene that occurs on nearly every occasion an internment takes place.  No matter old or young, large or small, the body has to lie alongside the grave while the grave is made larger, not withstanding ample notice given to the gravedigger.  A child was buried this afternoon, six year of age, and the coffin on being lowered, stuck, and had to be hauled up again, while one of the followers of the corpse had to take off his jacket and with pick and shovel made the grave larger.  The bereaved parents and friends were compelled to stand by while this was being done.  Surely, Sir, the sad necessity that takes us to the cemetery to lay the remains of a loved one in their last resting place, is harrowing enough without being aggravated by having to stand by while the grave is made larger.  Trusting your insertion of this will prevent any future occurrence of the like blundering – I remain yours truly

Rug up and join the team at Twisted History on this cold winters night on a Ghost tour or Investigation of the Geelong Gaol or a murder tour of Chinatown.

The Geelong Gaol has seen many people pass through its doors in its 142 year history.  Many of them would call this cold, impenetrable fortress home for a period of time.  Many would never leave it again ….

Chinatown is the oldest Chinese community outside of Asia.  It has been the scene of murders, crime, drugs and prostitution. Hear of Chinatowns links to some if the more infamous events in Victorian history such as the Gun Alley Murder, Eureka Stockade and Jack the Ripper.

Big lamington – artist’s impression

On June 11, 2011, Toowoomba broke the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest lamington at the Newtown Rugby League Club. The record-beater weighed 2361 kilograms, equivalent to 45000 normal lamingtons, and eclipsed the previous record held by Ipswich. Both cities claim to be the birthplace of this Australian classic and Toowoomba is contemplating erecting a “big lamington” as a tourist attraction.

But as for Friday the 13th …….

The fear of the number 13 has been given a scientific name: “triskaidekaphobia”; and on analogy to this the fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskevidekatriaphobia, from the Greek words Paraskeví (meaning “Friday”), and dekatreís (meaning “thirteen”).

The superstition surrounding this day may have arisen in the Middle Ages, “originating from the story of Jesus’ last supper and crucifixion” in which there were 13 individuals present in the Upper Room on the 13th of Nisan Maundy Thursday, the night before his death on Good Friday.  While there is evidence of both Friday and the number 13 being considered unlucky, there is no record of the two items being referred to as especially unlucky in conjunction before the 19th century
