Look a little closer at this portrait of eight couples snapped at a debutante ball in 1950. Do the young ladies’ shoulders seem a little broad? The young men’s jaws somewhat feminine? The 16 cheeky youngsters reversed their genders for a fund-raising event at the Manhattan Club in Mount Gambier in south-eastern South Australia. The popular club threw dozens of spectacles for charity, raising hundreds of pounds for local facilities, schools and hospitals. Reverse debutante balls were a regular event at the club — and very popular. At another gender-flipped ball in 1948, “the large crowd of onlookers … shrieked with laughter and applauded vigorously”.
