On this day ……… 30th of May 1953 

Homicide squad detectives investigating the Mildura “Pyjama Man” murder have taken possession of a 12in. iron bar. Senior-detective N. Wilby and Detective E. Miller found the bar when they went to Mildura to investigate fresh reports by local police. The bar will be examined by police scientific experts in Melbourne later this week. An aborigine told police he saw a man hide the bar in bushes a few weeks, after the murder of Milan Hlavenka, 32, Czechoslovakian student. Hlavenka was battered to death and robbed of £8/8/ while he slept, dressed in pyjamas, in a sleeping bag on the banks of the Murray near Mildura on May 30. Detectives Wilby and Miller interviewed several aborigines at the weekend.

 

ON THIS DAY – April 7, 1931

CARLTON

Detectives inquiring into the murder of Matthias Handley, 55, an invalid pensioner, at Carlton on April 7, believe that the crime is closely associated with the attempted murder of Hugh Gulliver, 25, business agent, of Elwood, on the same night. An hour and a half later after Handley was shot an attempt was made on Gulliver.

On This Day ……. 17th May 1906

Six Pentridge prisoners were escorted to the Geelong gaol on this day in 1906, by three constables, to complete their sentences in the sanatorium. The escort took back two prisoner who were paraded before detectives and discharged.

 

On This Day ……. 9th May 1906

A Geelong gaol warder, Robert Barker, who was on leave in Melbourne, was shadowed by detectives, and found delivering letters from a prisoner, the charges made against Detective Sexton.

 

ON THIS DAY – April 7, 1931

CARLTON

MANSFIELD

There has been a startling development In connection with the murder of the old man Butler, whose body was found in a bag at Mansfield, Victoria. The detectives arrested the daughter of deceased, Anastasia Butler, who was stated to have given her father a five-pound note on Easter Saturday to go away for a holiday. The accused is unmarried, and is 35 years of age.

 

ON THIS DAY – March 9, 1932

In the dock of the City Court stood Katherine Masterton, aged 46, charged with having at Richmond on the 9th of March murdered Dorothy May Draper, aged 20. Masterton was arrested by detectives, who found the body of the girl in a house. The police said that she died from an illegal operation performed by Masterton.
