A man named John Mitchell, who was on remand on a charge of larceny and several other charges of false pretences, escaped from the Criminal ward of the Ararat Asylum on the 17th of December 1917. Mitchell, who is an old offender, made his escape by sawing two battens off the eastern side of the exercise yard, and apparently he had a small saw concealed upon him for the purpose. He afterwards scaled the outside wall. In 1907 the same prisoner escaped from Sale Gaol, and was arrested about 15 months afterwards. Mitchell was dressed in light grey trousers and coat with a dark vest and a soft felt hat.
