On This Day – 17th February 1904
A young man named James Gates was on this day in 1904, sent to Geelong gaol for one month for stealing an umbrella on the 14th of January. Evidence was given to the effect that a Miss Clara Bartly, a milliner, on a visit from Creswick, called at an Italian fruit shop in Moorabool street, and left her umbrella behind. On returning next morning it was missing. Gates and several companions were in the shop during the evening, and the umbrella was taken by them and ultimately recovered at Gates residence on February 3rd.
